  1. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned in running is that stretching really IS THAT important. I know some runners who just refuse to stretch & it blows my mind. I guess they are fortunate to have never suffered an injury…

For at least 1.5yrs i didn’t stretch post run – My IT band (which i knew nothing about) just got tighter & tighter, and my knee pain got more intense. I had to quit running for 2 solid months, and then had to gradually build my way back up. I wore KT tape on my right knee for the following year while I worked on my strength. i FINALLY quit wearing KT tape in July – it was literally a year of taping for every long run & race. stretching is necessary, at least for me.

    — i’ve never lied about a PR or distance i’ve run. Garmin never lies.

  2. When I was younger I lied to my parents a lot. I would have to make up new lies to keep up with my old lies. It was exhausting and a horrible feeling to be lying so much. I’m so glad I’m past the lying stage. I have never lied about running times or distances.

  3. The main lesson that took me FOREVER to learn taking easy days. I bet the first few years of college I ran “hard” almost all the time. Not too crazy, but a lot of those long runs done at 5:30-6 min pace should have been done at 7-7:15 pace. I wish I had learned that before my body got beat to crap by the age of 23.

The way i’ve learned to do mileage to prevent myself from being overly-generous when estimating, is to go by “badger miles.” About five years ago I learned about how the university of wisconsin based most of their running on 7 min pace. So if they ran 70 mins they called it 10 miles, even if the run was done at 6 min pace. So you end up underestimating your miles. So when I do something like 80 miles for a week, its probably closer to 90-95. I’ve never lied about my PRs simply because most of my friends and coworkers don’t care about running so we never discuss it. haha.

p.s. Cait, try watching “peep show” on netflix, its one of my new favorites!

    • u’re like the male version of myself with this comment! lol. ya, i definitely went too fast on WAAAY too many ‘easy’ runs in my younger pup days. and the same goes with estimating mileage. i would always base it off a time that would underestimate my mileage, i take the ‘better safe than sorry’ attitude becuz i’m anal and if i’m supposed to run 8 miles it has to be at LEAST 8 and i’m totally cool if it’s longer. 😉
Ps-okay, i’m on it, netflix here i come!

  4. Right there with ya Staples! None of my friends run and therefore we never really talk about it! 🙂 I really need to go find some running peeps so that I can have a conversation with someone. 😉 I do have a customer that comes into the bank where I work and we always end up talking about running. Maybe I should hang out with him?? He he.
When you are feeling great physically, it is really hard not to want to just keep going or run an “extra” day. Something that I have learned is that your body truly does need the rest. And stretching. stretching stretching stretching.
Cait you are awesome and I am so thankful for your help!!! Long run tomorrow!!!

    • i am ALL for u making friends with that customer who is a runner. 🙂 u are doing SOOO well learning those important runner lessons much earlier than most….i’m so proud of my little runnerchick! 🙂 and kick the long run’s bum! 🙂

  5. Learning lessons the hard way is definitely the hard way to do it…it’s a pity sometimes that’s what it takes though! I think making an injury worse before you stop to let it get better is one of the big ones for many of us, myself included. Patience is a virtue, I need to remind myself of that!

  6. I love this post! I ad to learn that yo can’t just run through an injury. A few times! I think today was the first time I actually stopped and listened properly. The first time – no running for a long time!

I haven’t lied, but I think I embellished based on a fellow runner’s clock! No way was that 10km 47 mins (it was fast though ;-)…you know, for me!).

    Much love!

    • i’m SOOO proud of u for being smart and stopping before u did any more damage!! u’re such a mature runner, seriously, i’ve run until breaking too many times. :/ goooo kate!
