I like your points on decisive passing versus unplanned or casual passing – it makes a big difference, particularly if you really are aiming to overtake rather than just need to get past an obstacle in your way 😉
I get passed, and pass people throughout every race. I usually just go with it. I let the people pass me in the beginning, and then end up passing a few towards the end. I’m not fast, so I just go out to run and enjoy the race! I raced last weekend..and I ran this weekend..ANDdddD I am going to go run once my food settles!
These are awesome points! I think it totally plays with your mind if you’re passed effortlessly and if you make it look effortless when you pass people.
I ran 6km this morning and thankfully my knee felt ok!
Great post – I just raced a 5k this weekend and ended up passing the 2nd & 3rd female to place 1st. I usually don’t put to much thought into my passing strategy. The back & forth situations make me crazy – They mess with my head for sure. I usually try and surge to get far enough ahead after a few back & forth’s..
I’m back! And armed with conversational quips for all my wonderful blogger friends. Yay for summer holidays 🙂
I am not a particularly competitive runner. As with most things in my life I am just focused on competing against myself. Some situations do get me riled up enough to want to decisively pass someone. Case in point: an extremely rude runnerchick during a race earlier this year who was walk/running (which is fine) but she would pull ahead of me – directly in front- and then slow down to walk without moving over.
Not okay.
Luckily my sister was there to stop me from being too vocal with my opinion. Ahem, manners Amy…
Didn’t race this weekend but I did my long run yesterday 13km because it’s 10 weeks to my half!! Wearing my ‘Run your fortune’ shirt definitely helps 🙂
YAY she is back!! 🙂 hahaha…u crack me up, and seriously, i admire ur restraint and listening to ur sister for not giving that racewalker a BIGGER earful…that is just so rude! the countdown is ON…i’m sooo excited for u, cuz let’s be frank, u’re gonna kick some runnerchick butt. 🙂
I know some people prefer the race walk method but I’m not going to lie – totally hate it when I am near them having to pass them and then they pass me….so annoying. I tend to try and get away from them and usually I can without really trying to hard I find. Something I learned from another blog when it comes to racing and passing people….picture wrapping a rope around the person you want to pass and slowly reel yourself in. Totally helps me especially when I’m already running hard!

haha…if it’s an obstacle, just drop a shoulder and plow right thru it, right?? 😉 jk

Great tips!! I never really race to beat anyone- I’m usually just trying to cross the finish line 🙂 hehe
